How Can I Help My Child At Home?

It can be difficult to know how to help your child build his/her math skills. The most important thing to remember is that children need a strong foundation of number sense in order to comprehend higher order math skills. So, what is this?  The Scholastic website provides a great explanation:

Children with strong number sense think flexibly and fluently about numbers. They can:

  • Visualize and talk comfortably about numbers.

  • Take numbers apart and put them back together in different ways

  • Compute mentally — solving problems in their heads instead of using a paper and pencil.

  • Relate numbers to real-life problems

How Many Ways

How Many Ways example_edited.jpg

Here is an example of your children's work that shows their number sense. In this example students are showing how many different ways numbers can be expressed. We do this exercise at least once a week. Students choose a 2-digit number and are given 10 minutes to show me how many ways they can represent their number. If you look at the answers to these equations, you can see that some students are representing the number 82, some are representing 75, and some are representing 58. There are so many different ways to show these numbers!
