The Language Arts

Did you know a well-developed vocabulary is the best indicator of a child's future success in school?

Why? Because children naturally transition from "learning to read" in the early years, to "reading to learn" in later primary, and beyond. Without a well-developed vocabulary, children are unlikely to fully comprehend what they are reading and hearing when learning about more complex topics. A well-developed vocabulary also allows children to more fully express themselves. After all, it's easier to articulate your thinking when you know just the right words to use! Talking about what words mean both in the natural course of conversation, and when reading to your child, is extremely important to enhance your child's vocabulary, and thus, their conceptual development. Don't be afraid to use big words when you're speaking to your children, just remember to teach them what those words mean!
